Fall Must Listens and Watches!

Fall is officially here and that means we finally get to indulge in all the wonderful things that come with it: pumpkin spice EVERYTHING, chilly weather, spooky movies, and cozy vibes!

To celebrate this wonderful time of the year, we've decided to spotlight some must listens and watches that you can find at the Enrique Moreno Library that simply scream FALL.

Listens

Red (Taylor's Version) by Taylor Swift

Don't worry we are, of course, picking the version that should be mandatory listening for any self-respecting Swiftie - Taylor's Version of Red. It might be the autumnal covers of the cover or the incredibly melancholy aspect of the entire album but Red (Taylor's Version), along with folklore and evermore, feels like Taylor's clearly identifiable fall albums. Red (Taylor's Version) is a gargantuan piece of music; spanning 30 songs and multiple genres (including pop, indie folk, and even country), the fall vibes and emotions are on full display with this album. The good thing about us also having the approved Taylor's Version is that you can listen to her 10-minute version of "All Too Well," a devastatingly honest and raw ballad about where she paints an entire relationship. Much like fall, the entire album feels like one big transition piece as she moves away from the country genre and into indie folk, pop, and even electronic.

U218
by U2

Whether it's the more straightforward rock outings or the combination of folk/rock that they have in albums like The Joshua Tree, U2's work also carries with it a distinctly fall-like aesthetic to their music that you can listen to once September rolls in. Sure, there are plenty of songs in this "greatest hits" collection that have more of a fun summer vibe, but you have a lot of the early work that presents a lot of its fall-like quality with gusto and flavor. You can definitely listen to something like "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" driving down the road as you look at the ever-changing color of the leaves and those fall colors become even more present into the landscape. These 18 singles are iconic but much like the best of U2 they show a band willing to experiment and push their art forward and much like fall, it has a delightful moodiness that is infectious. But really all it needs is "October" and it would be perfect.

Ghostbusters Original Soundtrack

Fall season is also basically the start of spooky season, which is why we're going with an all-timer horror party jam: the Ghostbusters soundtrack! Not only is the entire soundtrack stacked with incredibly fun acts from the 1980s, like Air Supply, The Trammps, and The Bus Boys to name a few but this soundtrack also features tracks from the indelible Elmer Bernstein score (one of the great pieces of film scoring ever) and of course the Grammy award winning "Ghostbusters" by Ray Parker Jr. It is easy to take for granted how amazing this song is because it is so popular but one cannot deny that it is a complete winner from start to finish. Not only does it work perfectly within the context of the film but it also works as a pure single - starting out ominously (again perfect mood setter for the fall season) with delightfully discordant notes and then blowing them up with a glorious dance/funk classic. Plus, we even get a remix of the song that just crushes.

Watches

Over the Garden Wall

It really doesn't get more "fall" than this. Over the Garden Wall, created by Patrick McHale, is absolutely essential viewing for anyone wanting to get into the fall season. Not only does the Emmy winning miniseries feature all sorts of magical fall creatures, like skeleton pumpkins, but the show itself is animated with autumnal colors and a distinctly muted color palette that just gives it that cozy late September/October vibe perfectly. Like most great animated shows, Over the Garden Wall is entertaining for everyone and actually is, at times, strangely scary and moody with a sinister villain haunting our heroes as they go on a perilous journey across the Unknown. It also just happens to take place on Halloween, so that makes it even better and if that's not enough you have the voice talents of Elijah Wood, Melanie Lynskey, and Christopher Lloyd, so its all-around great.

Disney's Halloween Spooktacular (Hocus Pocus, Halloweentown I and II, Frankenweenie, etc)

One of the best things about the collection that we have is that you can check out boxsets with multiple movies and that is exactly what this wonderful boxset has - a plethora of spooky Disney movies for you to enjoy. Hocus Pocus and the two Halloweentowns are actually perfect watches for fall/spooky season as both directly use the season to their advantage and incorporate it into their storytelling; all three movies also incorporate an autumnal color palette full of rich browns, reds, and dark blues that just make it mandatory viewing for anyone wanting to get into the fall season. While Frankenweenie, The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad, The Haunted Mansion, and The Watcher in the Woods also include everything that you might expect from fall movie vibes; haunted settings, a wide variety of spooky entities haunting the characters, falling leaves from trees, fall colors, sounds of fall, and a different change of scenery from what we usually associate with summer.

Scream VI

The most outright horror film of this list and one that actually, for the first time in the series, takes place during Halloween! This year's smash hit is the longest film in the franchise and moves into a different setting: New York City (cue Welcome to New York song). Directed by Radio Silence (Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett), Scream VI reunites the survivors from the previous film, simply titled Scream (2022), in a different setting and has them come face to face with a much more different Ghostface than the one that they battled last time. With New York, come new rules and that is one of the film's strengths as the franchise pulls no punches in terms of clever twists and turns; plus they even go all out for a spooktacular metro sequence that is a Scream fan's dream (or should we say nightmare). Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, Hayden Pannettiere, and Courtney Cox also return for this next chapter in the acclaimed franchise.

So whether you want to listen to cozy fall music or get your Halloween started way early, you know you always have plenty of choices to choose from at the Enrique Moreno Library.

31 Days of Horror Movies - Day 16

We are officially less than halfway through with our list! Yay! As you all have probably noticed we are fully in R rated territory and today's pick is a genuine slasher classic, not to mention a phenomenon that is still going strong 27 years later!  Day 16 - Scream (1996) The late, great Wes Craven was one of the masters of horror and Scream (1996) remains one of his crowning achievements. Following the Jason Lives model, screenwriter Kevin Williamson and Craven team up to deliver a film that practically revolutionized horror in the process. Having changed the face of horror in the previous two decades ( The Hills Have Eyes , and A Nightmare on Elm Street ) Craven does it again with Scream by crafting a movie that both references and adores horror but isn't afraid to criticize it. The story of Sidney Prescott and her fight for survival against the deadly Ghostface killer has all the trademarks of a fantastic Craven film, including incredibly suspenseful sequences, a terrify...

31 Days of Horror Movies - Day 31

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!  We have officially made it! If you've been watching along with us and choosing all our recommendations, then thank you! There's nothing else to say, other than without any further ado... here is our final pick! ( Cue the JC score ) Day 31 - John Carpenter's Halloween "The Night HE Came Home!" Of course it was going to be John Carpenter's classic! The alpha and omega of slasher films is the quintessential Halloween watch. The story of Michael Myers, or as he is better known in the film as The Shape, stalking a babysitter has basically become classic. A true watershed film and a benchmark for the genre, Halloween not only changed the game but it spawned countless of imitators leading to the entire slasher subgenre boom in the 1980s. This is another one of those films where direction is everything - Carpenter takes a page from Hitchcock's textbook and allows suspense to become the key ingredient of the film. Originally titled "The Ba...

31 Days of Horror Movies - Day 23

Do not be surprised if a lot of these next titles are consistent classics, because what else are we going to do as we get closer to Halloween! For today's recommendation, it only seems fitting that we start the week with a pick that was based on a novel from the King of Horror... Stephen King, that is. Day 23 - Carrie (1976) Of course we're going with the original 1970s Carrie , directed as a stylish symphony of horror by Brian De Palma, and starring Sissy Spacek and the late, great Piper Laurie. Carrie , based on King's first novel of the same name, tells the story of a young girl who attempts to navigate high school life as she starts to develop psychic powers. Everything from the unflinching view of high school life, the film starts with an incredible opening credits sequence that informs the viewer exactly what the tone of the film is going to be, to the Academy Award nominated performances to even the last act of the film scream "classic". By telling the s...
